I’m disturbed by this “good” news:

Ban on Milk Labeling Ruled Unconstitutional

I use quotes around “good” and say I’m disturbed because I can’t believe the Ohio Department of Agriculture was even able to prevent dairy farmers from labeling their milk as “rBGH free” in the first place, nor why they would even want to (excluding potentially corrupt special interest manipulations).

Read more on this topic of at the American Public Health Association’s website:

Opposition to the Use of Hormone Growth Promoters in Beef and Dairy Cattle Production

From a food labeling law perspective, this is an interesting example. It seems the debate was about what is actually “rBGH free” - the cow or the milk. One of the commenters, “LawStudent” summarizes it this way:

@SarahK: I think I agree with you, but only in part. Ohio's government did NOT ban labeling milk to reflect that it did not come from treated cows. It only banned specific terms like "Hormone free" which Ohio found misleading since all milk contains hormones. It also banned "rbST free" labels. But it explicitly grants the right to label milk like this: "This milk is from cows not supplemented with rbST" so long as the label also included a statement saying, "The FDA has found no significant difference between milk from treated and untreated cows."

It seems to me that this problem has only come about because dairy farmers are allowed to sell milk from cows treated with rBGH without notifying the consumer - which many consumers do not want, for a variety of reasons. I do not think that is appropriate. Consumers should have the right to know if milk that they are considering buying has come from a cow that was treated with rBGH or not. It is natural that one would assume that since a cow that has been changed from its original state by rGBH, its milk would be the one labeled as “milk from a cow treated with rGBH”, and not the other way around, as it is today, where cows not-treated with rGBH get the labels.

With that in mind, I have to ask, consumers are the ones who decide what is good for them or not. If milk from cows treated with rGBH is good for them, label it as such, and they will buy it.

Food producers should not be allowed to hide facts about their products from consumers.

In my humble opinion, it is not corn sugar and I oppose the petition to change the name.

News agencies are saying that the association is requesting the change because of public perception that the ingredient is unhealthy.

After several months of being a happy Papa John's customer, I will no longer buy pizza from them.

I have to wonder what type of training Papa John's employees get. The employee I spoke with seemed to think it was a better idea to lose the sale and a customer instead of lose one pizza and make another.

Let's think about this. The employee had a choice:

Cancel the order, throw away the pizza, and lose the sale

Cancel the order, throw away the pizza, get a new order and keep the sale

I have to question the logic of any employee who would choose option 1, but the one I spoke to did.

This is what I sent to them:

I'm shocked and disappointed with the treatment I just received from this store. I have ordered a pizza from this same store every week for the past six months. Today, when ordering a pizza online, the system put hot peppers on both halves, when I wanted them only on one half. I called immediately when I saw the receipt to have the order changed and by the time my phone call was answered by a human, the order had not even been received. I held on the line for a couple more minutes until they found my order; I asked to have the hot peppers removed from one half, but they told me the pizza was already in the oven. I asked if I could cancel that order and order a new one, and they said no. I questioned the logic behind their response, saying it was written right on the website that I could call to change or cancel my order. He said he could cancel the order, but wouldn't make me a new one, so I told him to cancel my order. You just lost a regular customer.

After canceling my Papa John's order, I ordered from Domino's instead.

From what I've learned by reading books and watching films about the food industry shows a cozy and possibly corrupt relationship between the "officials" at the FDA and the executives at the largest food corporations: Monsanto, Tyson, numerous mega-farms and meat processing plants.

Why aren't more people outraged??

I also have to question the "authorities" who announced that the seafood coming from the Gulf of Mexico so quickly after the BP oil leak was capped is safe to eat when most scientists and researchers are stating that more testing and data is needed.

Need proof? Glad you asked!! Check it out:

Its not the biggest fish I've ever caught, but it was a cool experience anyway. I unhooked the little bugger and placed it back into the ocean.

My sister sent me an interesting email recently about which vegetables retain the most pesticides of all and which retain the least.

Spinach

Kale

Cherries
