Decisions, Decisions...
Looking at all the cookware products out there, the one that strikes me as the oddest these days is the silicone bake ware. They seem too good to be true, light weight, non stick, colorful, varying sizes and shapes. But it makes me wonder is cooking on silicone safe? Will chemicals leach into your food, causing some bizarre form of cancer? It seems like such a new product how can anyone possibly know enough about it to make claims regarding its safety.
The History of Silicon Bake Ware
It turns out silicone bake ware was first created by a French chemist by the name of Guy Demarle it was introduced to the public in 1982, and gained popularity in the states in 1998 after a favorable article about silicone cookware was published in the New York Times. In my opinion if it was on the market for 16 years before it even became popular in the states, any adverse or undesirable effects would have been noticed by now.
Silicon seems like some newfangled chemical, but its not. Its actually made from sand, glass, or whatever you want to call it.
I guess you can even make it yourself:
