We finally made it to Baby Cakes in Wollaston today. Even though on one side of the door a sign said open and the other side of the door a sign said closed, my wife went in. They were indeed open and she was able to get two cupcakes. A little pricey at $3+, but the one I just ate was delicious. The icing was amazing, and the cake tasted good, but wasn't as fresh as I'd hoped. The slightly stale texture may have come from it having been refrigerated in a dry case.
My guess is that since they are a new shop they still need to figure some things out (like the open / closed signs) as well as how many cup cakes they need to make on a regular basis to support demand, occasionally sell out, and stay fresh.
