Thanksgiving Fare

Every family has a certain traditional dish they like to serve at Thanksgiving along side the expected turkey, mashed potatoes, etc. In our house, it is the yummy roasted root veggies and the tasty squash souffle. My husband's maternal side of the family has meat pies and monkey bread. I had never heard of meat pies before having Thanksgiving with them. That side of his family is French-Canadian and meat pies are tradition at Christmas dinners. My husband's grandmother prepares it for both the Thanksgiving feast and at Christmas dinner. Keeping with the French-Canadian style meat pie, theirs is made from ground pork and veal and mixed with various spices. What spices I do not know, I have never gotten the sense that their recipe is a secret one, but more a coveted responsibility by the grandmother. As for the monkey bread, that is a responsibility that is easily passed on to the young ones to help make. I have to be honest I don't eat meat so I skip the meat pie every year- but I think that is a good thing as I am not even sure there'd be an extra piece. It is gobbled up as fast as the turkey is. And if someone is looking for leftovers- they make an extra pie just for everyone to take a little home. The monkey bread I do enjoy- it is a sticky cinnamony sweet treat.
