I hate- hate writing about this stuff. Partially because stories like this frustrate me so, because I feel like it is so preventable. Most agricultural products have risk of salmonella since they come contact with tainted waters, random animal feces, etc outdoors- thus the reason for cooking and washing your veggies. But from what I understand, peanuts are generally low on the danger list for salmonella, since they are roasted, which usually would kill the bacteria. What seems to have happened here is salmonella exposure post-roasting. From what I have read, rat poop, bird poop or contaminated water from leaky roofs are likely to blame. Yes, you read that right, stomach-turning food production conditions. Where are building inspectors?? Especially when it comes to a building that produces food products!I find it hard to write sensibly when I am mad or frustrated. But it is big news and people need the information so I just wanted to make a brief post about it. MSNBC has a pretty comprehensive article with just about all the links you'll need to get the right information.
