Voluntary Rules for Olive Oil

I just read a New York Times article about new rules the Department of Agriculture is rolling out with regard to olive oil. The rules are in regard to food label laws, more specifically - that producers of olive oil must actually deliver what the label promises.

Sounds like a great idea! But wait - these rules are voluntary. In my opinion, that makes them absolutely useless.

It reminds me of the new FDA "rules" about animal growth hormones, totally voluntary.
